Maastricht - A Pride of The Netherlands
Maastricht - A Pride of The Netherlands
The Netherlands is home to some of Europe's loveliest cities and one of them is Maastricht. This capital town of Limburg may have gotten a queer name but there's a history to that. The city's name actually refers to the area where it is situated -- on the River Meuse which means Maas in Dutch located in the southeastern section of The Netherlands on the foot of Mount St. Peter. The Romans during the time of Augustus Caesar built a bridge here known in Latin as Trajectum Ad Mosam or Mosae Trajectum.Maastricht came to be known by its name way back in 50 B.C. but was considered a part of The Netherlands only in 1815 after the so-called Napoleonic era. It was the first municipality to have had Medieval city rights and the first Roman settlement in The Netherlands to have the potential of becoming a city. The city also played a key role in Europe's unification in 1991. While The Netherlands was chairman of the European Council at that time, it was here where the EC's summit conferences took place resulting in the Treaty of Maastricht. This treaty led to the integration of Europe's political, economic and monetary systems.Today, Maastricht covering an area of 5,896 hectares has a population of about 120,000. Its major economy is derived from commerce, services and industry such as the manufacture of glass, cement and paper. Among the top companies with a major presence in the city include Hewlett-Packard, DaimlerChrysler, ENCI or the First Dutch Cement Industry, Sappi (a South African pulp and paper firm), Vodafone and Pie Medical Imaging B.V.Visitors in Maastricht won't be disappointed with the city as there are so many attractions they can explore. In the city's centre alone are numerous historical landmarks such as buildings and 1,450 monuments that are protected by law. In fact, the entire center is considered a "protected area" owing to its heritage value. These historic structures are always maintained in that caretakers make sure to keep the original atmosphere of the area even after the renovation work.Getting to Maastricht is easy, the city being accessible either by car, bus, rail or airplane. The airport here has the latest facilities and accommodates daily flights to London and Amsterdam.Various festivals can be enjoyed in the city each year. These include the KunstTour, the European Fine Art Fair (TEFAF), the Preuvenemint culinary show every August, the Carnival and the Winterland.Of course, there are lots of must-see tourist attractions in this town that staying only a few days won't be enough to discover the city. To learn about the history of Limburg, the Natuurhistorisch Museum is the place to go as it displays artifacts on the province's geology, paleontology as well as flora and fauna. For art history, the Bonnefanten Museum of Art is recommended.Other interesting sites are the Bassin Harbour, the Helpoort, Hoge Fronten bastion, Kazzematten tunnels, Markt and Onze-Lieve-Vrouwe squares and St. Pietersberg which features a fort and caves.
